Mary Magdalene as Melancholy Artemisia Lily .jpg

Finding Artemisia: The Un-heroic Tradition.

Based on the genre defying work of Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi, this series charts the experience of the artist and sitters, as we unpack and explore experiences of gender-based violence through portraiture. Each portrait charts the journey of the relationship between artist and model, woman to woman. Through this process relationships are built between artist and sitter, navigating difficult conversations and stories, breaking down the traditional concept of the ‘silent muse’, and creating a series of larger-than-life works to reflect the sitters own personal experiences with gender based violence.
